The Chinese claim to have invented chess some 2000 years ago during the Hansing campaign.
This exquisitely detailed set is an example of a beautifully carved 19th century Chinese chess set which would have been originally carved from one entire portion of ivory, with each piece well proportioned and the perfectly finished piece mounted upon an octogonal base.
